Mary Margaret Martin

Mary Margaret Martin, 95, of El Dorado  passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Timberlane Health and Rehab.

Born June 6, 1928 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Alexander and Hannah Walls Ewing.  Mrs. Martin had been a secretary and homemaker.  She was a member of First Christian Church of El Dorado.

Reading was Mary’s first love.  She was a ferocious reader of murder mysteries, English, and French History.  If she didn’t read every murder mystery at Barton Library, she had to have come close.  She would check out 10-20 books at one time and get frustrated when any of them turned out to be a book she had already read.  Regarding English and French History, she knew the kings and queens better than most people know their own family.  Every conversation on current events eventually lead to a history lesson about some royal and how his policies upset or saved the people.

Movies- the oldies, but goodies- were her second love.  Personally, I used her as an “old movie TV guide.”  She knew all the actors and actresses, who was married/divorced/married/divorced to whom, awards won, and everything else.  As a child she went to the movies every week- two movies, cartoons, and a newsreel for a dime!  Her favorites were musicals- mainly Rodgers and Hammerstein; South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song, Show Boat.  When the movies weren’t on, we listened to the records over and over again.

Mary was smarter and funnier than she ever gave herself credit for. She loved and cared for her family.  We will miss her very much.

Mary was preceded in death in April, 2005 by her husband, Dale Martin.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Johnson (Pat) of El Dorado and her son, Scott Martin (Frances) of Cocoa, FL along with grandchildren; Shannon Johnson, Alexandra Johnson, Stacy Martin, Heather Martin and Christopher Martin and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Martin.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens  with Rev. Bill Odom officiating.  Interment will follow under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.

Memorials may be made to Barton Library, 200 E. 5th Street, El Dorado, AR 71730.
